Toilet Art

Say what, toilet art!! Haha. It has been a couple of weeks since The Mister tore out the toilet in our downstairs bathroom. The lid has been sitting outside the door for about a week when one day I went by it and thought, you know what, I can do something with that. Of course Mister thought I was nuts and told me so, lol.
So here is the old lid sitting up against the new toilet  that Mister is going to put in.

I thought I would put a graphic on it and decided on this one.
It's reversed in this picture, but it is a Christmas theme.

As you can see, it didn't work out. The toilet lid is to shiny and smooth for the ink to stick.
What to do, what to do!!

So I wiped the ink off and decided to spray paint a few clear coats of paint onto the lid, but I was still unsure if it would work because it was still fairly smooth. And I didn't want to put the image on again and not be able to take it off if it looked like it did the first time. (pic above).

So I mixed up a little paint that I had and painted the lid, I only painted about 3/4 of it but I should have painted it all.
Tell you why in a minute.
After applying the paint like this,

I took a napkin and dabbed it around on top of the paint, it gave it a little texture to it.

Next came the photo I wanted to use. I got it from The Graphics Fairy love her graphics.

Here is how it turned out! I love it and even The Mister complimented it, but it was still lacking, so back to the Graphics fairy I went.
I had to add more paint to the top to make sure the ink stuck, but somehow it is yellow compared to the lower half that was painted. You can tell it here in this picture below.

Then I added a little decoration on the bottom.

Overall it isn't so bad and The Mister liked it a whole lot. It's hard to impress him so I was happy!!

The picture above does not have flash.
The picture below does.
Makes a difference in colors.

It looks old and that is what I wanted.
I used the wax paper method on here and it worked great.
After I added all I wanted to the piece I sprayed it with 4 coats of clear paint to make sure it stays on.
Go figure, a toilet lid that looks pretty!!

It's heavy and I am going to put it in my daughter's room. Just don't know where yet! It doesn't fit well where I took the picture at and I can't hang it. So right now it is on the floor so it doesn't fall and break.
Hope you enjoyed, I am so happy on how it turned out.

    1. Thank you for your sweet reply! I just look for graphics or pictures, usually from the Graphics fairy but also pictures from around the web that I can copy and use for my pieces.

  2. I thought it was going back on top of the toilet when it was finished (which would be nice) but turning it into art is even better! Lovely idea and beautifully done.

  7. You intrigued me with the title "toilet art". Very creative project. I saw a really neat planter on Pinterest a while back. It was made out of the water tank of a toilet. She applied a three-dimensional sunflower with leaves. It was absolutely gorgeous. I've been looking for tanks on my neighborhood trash piles ever since.

    1. Yeah, you don't see toilet art very often, lol. That is interesting about the tank, to bad you don't live close, I would have given you ours. Thanks for stopping by.

  8. I would not have thought of doing anything like this with a tank lid, but I love it! I might have to head to the ReStore to see if they have one.

  9. Well, why not have art in the toilet... even though the finished piece didn't end up back there. Very creative - a great finish.
