Goodwill...... Not Good

Have you ever went into a thrift store, Goodwill or yard sale and saw a piece you loved, no one had claimed it yet, so you run like the devil is chasing you and grab it???
Well, just look at this little gem...

That's right, I was so excited that I grabbed the tag, looked around for a few more minutes and then went up front to pay! Only $24.99, with some work to do on it!
Here's how the convo went:
Clerk: Find everything ok?
Me: Yes, my husband is going to kill me, lol.
Clerk: Is it the white dresser?
Me: No, the green one.
Clerk: Oh yes, do you need help out with it?
Me: Nope, I need to go get my truck!
Clerk: No problem, that will be $24.99.
I hand her the money, so excited because I have wanted one of these in like FOREVER, lol.
She starts to hand me the receipt. Then stops, then looks at the clerk in front of us. She doesn't hand me the receipt and says she needs to give me the money back.
WHAT? WHY? NO!!! The clerk says that the man in front of me just bought the green dresser...........
.......................................
I have the ticket here in my hand that I got to it first. The clerk says that just because I have the ticket doesn't mean that I get it! She says people take the tickets off all the time and never buy it!!
AGAIN, WHAT???
I'm standing here with the ticket in my hand as proof that it did indeed NOT fall off.
Clerk: Sorry I will issue a refund.
Me: NO I don't want the refund, I paid for it and I'm taking it home.
I go back and take pictures of it because deep down I know I can't have it.
I'm pissed, I'm in tears, I want to scream at the man that was ahead of me and wouldn't even look at me or say anything to me.

EASY COME, EASY GO!!
The clerk comes and finds me and gives me back my money and I leave in tears.

GOODWILL, NOT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I tell myself I'm not going back.

One week later... I'm back in Goodwill. I can't help it.
And this is what I found today that kind of redeemed them but NOT really.
I still do not like their business practices!

My Finds....
I Love this picture! I can not capture the way the color is so vibrant, but trust me, it is!

And you cannot tell by the picture but it is glittery and Christmassy and wonderful.

And, just look at this chair! I fought myself over this one. Should I get it? Should I leave it? I'm a chair whore and I need another chair like I need a hole in the head. I didn't want to pay the $29.99 for it either and when I asked the clerk if she would go down to 20 because it needs to be reupholstered and/or cleaned, she said no.
Understandable, but even though I love the material, it is dated and frayed and very very dirty. So I bought it!

So this is how I explained it to the Mister: I was just about ready to walk out the door but our debit card jumped out of my purse and said please, PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THEM BEHIND. No one wants them and you must save them, waving my hands up in the air, lol.
Yeah... the Mister believed that one too!!!
So now I have to clean the chair, learn how to make slip covers or reupholster it and find a place for that wonderful vibrant picture that I had a perfect spot for, that doesn't fit now that I have it home, lol.

Have you ever had an experience like this??
What did you do??

  2. I had the exact vanity in an earlier life. I loved it, and if I saw the like at Goodwill, I would grab it, too. So sorry it got snatched away from you like that. You can hope it went to a good home, but let's face it: not as good as yours.

  3. Yes, I had that happen at a yard sale. A woman two minutes ahead of me bought Four ornate end tables that I would die for and paid about $20 for ALL of them. I still have angst over that episode.

  6. No, I haven't had an experience quite like that one. (I do, however, have a painting in our dining room that I saw from across the store and fell in love with just as someone else was lifting it down into his cart. He must've heard my mental urging because he put it back and it came home with me.)

I hope your painting and chair make up for the loss of the dresser. That couple is just fantastic.

  8. Yes exactly the same happened to me with a set of school lockers. When I was in fron t of the cashier with my money at hand, the person in charge of the sorting room, came over to tell me those were sold already, and this was the same person that gave me a deal in order for me to take both sets. I was so dissapointed with him, that I had to talked to the manager, he apologized and that was it. Yes, I did return to the store because is the one near to my house, but I had never seen that guy again.

  9. Ahhh, so sorry that you didn't get it. I just hate when stuff like that happens. Looks like you got a cool painting and chair instead, so at least it wasn't a total loss. ... Anyways, great to visit with you this morning. GOD bless you, Love! :-)

  10. Cheryl, thanks for visiting my blog. Just read your post and I could have written some of it. But the green dresser should have been yours! Mean old Goodwill. They are wrong, wrong, wrong. You had the tag. But I love the picture you found. It is gorgeous! So sorry that green dresser didn't come home with you. xo Dianne

  11. I have never had Goodwill refuse to sell me a piece of furniture but I can certainly identify about the chairs. I have chairs all over the house, in the garage and even bits and pieces. What is it about chairs we love? The one you got is really great.

  16. Sorry to hear about your dresser, but thank you for sharing your story. Now I know to never just take the tag off a piece at goodwill, if it fits in the cart or i can drag it up to the register, I will!
